Here is a gift from me, via a good friend I made this year, Remain.
He runs one of my favorite French labels, MEANT, home of Siskid, Remote and himself and has commissioned remixes from Ewan Pearson, Tim Paris, Ivan Smagghe and Electric Rescue. My next Clouded Vision EP will be released through him at the beginning of 2011, but in the meantime enjoy one of my favorite 80's new wave records, beefed up beautifully for the New Years dance floor. If you have been at any of my gigs recently you will have heard me closing with it, luckily always to a great effect!

Sitting at home on a Saturday night due to heavy snow, I thought it would be a good time to round up a great year with a chart of tracks, albums and key musical moments.

1. Caribou - Sun

Not only my most listened to LP of the year, but some of the best remixes and the finest single. Remixes from James Holden, MCDE and Midland have all been staple in my sets throughout the year. An album loved by indie kids, techno nerds and even housewives, an extremely tough line to hit.

2. Azari and III - Indigo (and the REAL early house revival.)

Although Coma Cat is probably the biggest track in this genre, I have to admit I've never played it. Not sure why, maybe just my avoidance of sure fire hits. Alongside Kink and MCDE, Azari are the house leaders in my ears and in a year riddled with generic bongo-yawn house, a true breath of fresh air.

3. Art Department - Without You

E-Funk or 2010's version on filter house has been huge, with some of the tracks being real highlights for me, mainly anything by the amazing Nicolas Jaar, but this one has been the real crossover hit. I was lucky to pick it up quite early on in the year and loved it straight away, but by no means saw the scale in which it was to blow up.

Shouts definitely need to go out to Jamie Jones and Lee Foss for their excellent "Hot Creations" imprint. Every release has been solid and has taken the e-funk sound to another level. Alongside their great releases on Culprit as "Hot Natured" their tracks have all hit the spot.

4. Gesaffalstein - Atmosphere

"Variations" was the biggest dance floor EP of the year for me. Very rarely do i play more than one track from a release in a night, but at times I considered playing three from this. So good to hear real analogue synths in tracks, as opposed to the sound of balloons squeaking, with the added bonus that they can all be played from a stage or a DJ box and have the desired effect in each.

5. Darabi - Top Drop

Not only are these guys so good that they are the first act to have an EP signed to my label, but they also get the award for most the plays of a single track in 12 months. Phil Darabi sent me "Top Drop" at the beginning of the year and coupled with label mate, Clement Meyer's still unreleased "Romper Stomper" I honestly think I've played it every set since. It has enough disco edge to play early, the desired impact to play peak and the perfect hooks to play late. With the return of Kill The DJ and Get The Curse's new label, the French techno scene is well and truely back on the map.

Darabi's new EP "Truckin" will be released on Clouded Vision Music in February 2011 with remixes from Krikor, The Love Supreme, Bozzwell and myself and Steve Cook as Clouded Vision.

6. Storm Queen - Look Right Through

This record gets the award for "best moment in a track". When the vocal comes down after the break and the synth changes at four minutes. A definate late contender for track of the year.

Morgan Geist invented "Nu Disco" and provided me with a soundtrack to play in bars before I had any real club gigs at the start of the decade and this is possibly the best thing since he's done since the sublime Metro Area LP.

7. Factory Floor - Lying

This year saw the start of a real indie, new wave comeback. If it's called "dark wave", "minimal wave" or whatever, this is a great track from a great band. Reminds me a lot of PIL and the sheer noise of My Bloody Valentine. Another great EP only just released that I have had on repeat is Gatekeeper's Giza EP on Merok. Sheer John Carpenter horror movie house.

8. My own production

This year saw some tracks ane remixes released finally as "Matt Walsh". Something I am very proud of and will continue to do next year with an upcoming remix of Passarala Death Squad and a few other new secrets. I will also release a new Clouded Vision EP on Remain's excellent MEANT imprint, two slow 100 bpm electronica cuts with remixes from Remote, Darabi and People Get Real. My first solo track, Honey Comb, had some great remixes, the stand out one coming from my one of my Canadian acid buddies, Mike Mind.

I just finished a remix for Passarala Death Squad on George Issakidis's great label "The Republic of Desire". It's a label I am a big fan of and am very happy with the result. As soon as I get the all clear it will be up for you to listen to.

It's a massive cliche to play House music in the summer months and I am the first person to admit I'm not really a "house" guy. Clouded Vision - Outside EP (Clouded Vision Records) (CLOUDED 002)

Clouded Vision return with the second release on their own label, following the "Neon Rain" EP that was played and strongly supported across the board from the likes of Ivan Smagghe, Shit Robot, Mickey Moonlight and Dye to name a few.

The second EP, titled "Outside" uses an infectious guitar bass to create a constant groove that is taken up, down and inside out by a selection of synths and 303 baselines. The break hits you with a huge injection of sub bass before dropping into a new groove carries the track to the next level.

On remix duty are San Francisco's 40 Thieves from Permanent Vacation who produce a live analogue belter of a remix, Photonz from Portugal who have released on Dissident and D.I.R.T.Y. go dark and groovy and ZNTN, recently remixed by Shit Robot on Astrolab Recordings, edits the original to great effect.

Matt Walsh has made a solid name for himself on the London scene emerging as a talented resident for the likes of Bugged Out! and Tiga’s imprint Turbo as well as the new ‘High Horse’ night at T-Bar with mates Casper C and Skull Juice. Production projects with Hypercolour boss Alex Jones and with Steve Cook as Clouded Vision are forging the beginning of a promising and wide-ranging sound with remixes already for the likes of The Proxy, Brodinski and Cari Lekebusch. With temperatures soaring this week Matt’s mix is perfect for those long summer evenings, or as he says "this mix is pretty typical of what you might expect from the latter portion of a warm up set, when the dance floor has filled, and the energy goes up a notch."

The track list includes new Audion material and his new remix of Peaches with Alex Jones giving a nice taster of what to expect at this Friday’s Bugged Out! takeover of room one. We chat to him about his musical roots, inspirations and current projects.

How did you get into Djing and who were your biggest inspirations when you started?

I always bought records, but only had one turntable until I lived with three djs at university. One played trance, one prog house and one hard house. I hated all their music and started mixing mine on their decks. I have followed Andrew Weatherall since I bought Screamadelica in the early 90s. Him and David Holmes were the first DJs I loved because they seemed to be the only ones who werent boring and linear to me. They got me into more 4/4 music when I was a britpop kid and I started out playing soul, funk and disco, old acid house records in bars and then a club night in my home town in Essex in 2002. Electroclash was born and I had fallen in love with it straight away.

You seem to have embraced twitter along with a great number of other DJs. What excites you more today – new technology or new music?

Until 3 or so years ago I was computer illiterate. I think I was one of the last people I know to get a myspace and only got a facebook at the start of this year. I was late on using CDs as well and only quite recently have started to leave vinyl at home. Twitter is the main thing I use now as its simple and works really well in a kind of chinese whispers kind of way. Soundcloud is also a great new tool.

If I had the choice of course its new music. There are new genres being written by the second it seems and a lot of new and exciting things everywhere.

You’ve prepared a promo mix for your upcoming set at the Bugged Out takeover at this Friday’s fabriclive - could you tell us a little more about it?

I prepared it to sound like the last hour of an early set, when the floor is full. I also took into consideration the Friday sound at fabric. I think the sound I play sometimes fits into Fridays and some Saturdays, pretty much where Bugged Out does too. It starts very deep and kind of disco with some acidic elements and builds to pretty banging after an hour, then makes its way back down again just in time for the next act to take over. (Dusty Kid on Friday).

What does London and the club scene here mean to you?

Its the only place in the world where you see and hear things first. Trends in sounds and fashions all start here. I moved to London 4 years ago and still love the buzz of the city and I live right in the middle of it too. People say its pretentious but you are spoilt for choice and there is something to do every night bu it has been amazing for me and without moving here I wouldn't have got to where I am now.

What does warming up require in your opinion?

I could talk for ages about this, I think some people really dont care, some want to just arrive at a club and go mad and others would rather wait and enjoy the build up. I think with a club that is open til 6 or 7am there is not really any need for people to dance before 11:30. I have played in clubs where massive tunes are played by residents at 10pm and the floor is exhausted before the main guest puts a record on. I have played the first slot a quite a few times now and always try to be patient and not get carried away. The first and last slots can be the hardest to play, but I enjoy both and its the time of the night where you can be more experimental. For a DJ that likes a lot of different music its great to play at different times of the night.

What, for you, is the appeal of collaborating in the studio and what are you currently working on?

Its been the easiest way for me to learn. I am a DJ and spend 2 or 3 hours a day looking for new music and listening to what fits together with eachother. If I would have made the choice to produce alone I think my DJing wouldn't have taken off as well as it has. There is a lot of pressure on DJs to produce a lot of music now and its something I have learnt a lot about in the last 2 years. With Steve in Clouded Vision I have been making early evening disco sounds, with vintage equipment I have been buying, with Alex Jones, late night house and techno. As Matt Walsh alone eventually I want to make something that is more peak time, I have a lot of things I have worked on but dont want to put my name to alone yet and sometimes if you make something that associates you with a 'scene' you can get stuck somewhere you may not want to be.

Release wise I have the Peaches Remix with Alex and more remixes for Williams on Turbo Recordings and one for Wax:On's new label (who I am in Ibiza with now writing this!). Clouded Vision will have 2 vinyl only white label EPs over the summer, with remixes from friends Photonz, 40 Thieves, Astronomer, The Nialist and ZNTN. We also have some remixes finished and upcoming for Johnny Dynell, We Have Band and King Roc.
At the moment I am working with Alex on a techno sounding EP and some edits as CV to go out on whites also. They will all go up on Soundcloud as soon as they are done.

Really Good Robot!!

Last night I was in Leeds for Bad Robot @ Mint Club with Tiga. The club was pretty small and absolutely rammed with sweaty people. Tiga was on great form and at times even raised and arm or two, but wait for the grand finale, one shoe was held aloft during shoes!!

Amazing night all round, another great wax:on event and luckily my recording worked a treat! Here is my set from 11:30-1 before Tiga came on.

Since the last post, I have been slack..

I do apologise and to make up for it, here is a special treat. My set recorded live from The Turbo Party at Lolita, Razmatazz, Barcelona in February last month. I was playing for 2 hours before Jori Hulkonnen and for some reason the recording goes into half time after the first hour so here is the first bit!

Expect just over an hour of warm acid house and techno, no big bangers. One of my favourite gigs this year so far. I really felt that the crowd were happy to build nicely and towards the end of the 2 hours tracks such as Tiga's "What You Need" and VV Brown - Leave (Style of Eye Remix) blew the place apart. Thanks Barcelona, hopefully more gigs like that to come! Great to meet Jori at last too....

Greece Rainstorm!

This weekend I was in Athens, Greece, playing for a party called "Disco Pogo" run by some great guys called "The Flying Lillis Brothers". I played a somewhat more disco set than usual that I very much enjoyed along with the great company.

I recorded this short 30 min disco mix prior to going for a local internet radio show. I then also found that upon arrival I was thrust into a Greek radio studio for an impromtu 1 hour show! Unfortunately getting lost in translation massively and coughing over what I didn't realise was a newsreader, I became somewhat embarrassed!

Two Thousand and Great

It's the end of the year and a great year it's been for music. In some ways there has been a shift in trends, genres and clubbers and I think another change isn't that far ahead. 2008 for myself and a lot of dj's will be a year where there were certain situations where you felt that you had to play a certain track, one that would make the crowd go absolutely crazy. Early this year I was lucky enough to do a podcast with Tiga and Thomas on this topic and since then I think there has been a shift back to more traditional methods and, dare I say it, "dancing" in clubs.

An end of year "BEST OF" mix sounds like a cliche, so I thought I would put together a mix of tracks I have loved this year, but have never got round to playing. Maybe through being scared they would kill the dancefloor and maybe just because they are better suited to an ipod than a club. One is a Clouded Vision remix that I am really proud of but again its quite hard to play in a big room. The last track is one of my favourite dance records ever and again there is no chance you could drop this in a club!

I liked it, firstly, for the great choice of tunes and massive echo overload and secondly because of this amazing supernerd description that comes with it. Included on it is ZNTN'S edit of Clouded Vision's "Outside".

"My creative process is about inspiration and gathering. I'm not a
musician, I don't know how to play an instrument or read music. I'm a
"geek", a librarian - I've always enjoyed music and collect and read
about it frenetically . I'm so obsessed by it that I try to create it
- usually by mimicking artist I like - I study their patterns, how the
instruments interact and I think of them as gears on a machine
punching in in time of course this imitation is distorted by my own
experiences and failure to achieve the same results creating what I'd
see as my signature.
For the same reason I enjoy so called "dance music" (whatever it's
genre), it has a function which is not subjective because you can have
results and it is a tool.
Usually I start by listening to a certain track or seeing a certain dj
perform that inspires me and I try to lay some bass lines on a virtual
drum machine and try to understand how something was done.
I listen to as much "rock" music (which is nothing but an western
aberration of tribal music) as "electronic" and I like to take
emphasis on their connection. Usually when editing a rock song I treat
it as electronica, I take some basses and loop them, make the
breakdowns more intense, add a more pulsating beat and redo the
structure to sound more like a track. At the same time when handling
electronica I like to treat it as a rock song, focusing melody and
mood and many times adding classic pop structures like AABA, etc.
By the same fact I'm inspired by music trends that unite these two
sides, I quite enjoy the concept of DIY and people who try to jump
from one side to the other - I'm talking from northern soul's black
roots, to the groove present in post-punk or industrial or (viceversa)
DIY, punk esthetic of early house and techno.

The following set was recorded "live" at my living room last night at
3am so I apologize for any mistakes. The track list is very conceptual
as it represents a list of musicians, producers, djs and friends that
influenced me.

As for the hardware I've used one technics 1200, one cdj 800, one
vestax 175 mixer and a kaos pad3."

I found an old mix cd last night with some of my favourite tracks of what must have been around september 2004 and maybe, due to a hungover state, I think it should be shared. Download it soon before I change my mind and take it down...

At the time I was djing in Essex to a load of people that probably had no idea what these records were, but I seem to remember them dancing to some.

High Horse

So, like a lot of the best clubs in London, The T Bar is closing at the end of the year... Sad news I know, but they have assured me there will be a new venue close by in the new year.

Last night was the monthly night I run with Skull Juice and Casper C. Now, yes there are a lot of nights using the "horse" reference but this is in essence a different meaning, where by we have a great sound system and an excuse to go up our own behinds and play pureist house and techno.

This week we had a young guest, who has caused a stir on the London scene in the last few months, Nikniknik. Nik is the youngest person I know that owns Kerri Chandler records and lives and breathes disco and deepness. While others his age are searching the Hype Machine for that latest club smash, Nik is delving deep into the depths of strictly rhythm and beyond and mixing them with upfront disco boogie.

Steve Cook, alias my partner in Clouded Vision.

I asked Steve to do me a mix that best describes himself and what better than an all-vinyl back to 91' rave mix? Ok so the challange has been set for this blog now, the first guest mix is indeed something special....

Luckily for Steve his mum worked in a club in Essex where we are both from. He had the chance to visit a REAL rave in 1991 before I was even given any homework, let alone tried to do any! Steve was 9 and inbetween washing glasses took a peek at what people got up to at these "raves". At the time technotronic and nomad were playing and from some of our productions so far you can clearly see the influence.

While others were trying to avoid measels, Steve had well and truely caught the rave bug, bought some decks in 96' and became obsessed with hardcore/jungle/drum&bass culture. He started to organise events around local halls and youthclubs and thankfully through living in Essex found it easy to get hold of a fake id to get into Oscars 3 years early..

Since then he has built his own studio, made countless tracks from every genre you can imagine, raved as hard as he possibly could and now is settling down for a life in the studio with me! Clouded Vision was formed at the end of 2007, our first two releases are on the shelves and 2 more are expected this month.
